Welcome to Kay Fly

home to your wildest inshore fly fishing dreams. Located in Punta Allen, Mexico, on the shores of the legendary Ascension Bay in the middle of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve and home to some of the most legendary inshore fly fishing on earth.

The Kay Fly Lodge is owned operated by Punta Allen native, lifelong guide and acclaimed Tournament Champion Jose Ucan and Lily Bertram, who has been operating Ascension Bay lodges for over 18 years.

At Kay Fly, our specialty is fly fishing. Specifically, creating some of the most incredible fly-fishing experiences of our guest’s lives. Ascension Bay in notably famous for its permit, bonefish and tarpon fishery, and our lodge is outfitted with the experienced guides and hospitality set-up specifically oriented to deliver a week of fishing that will be burned into the memories of everyone we have welcomed here. 

You will wake to the sound of the water lapping at the beach in front of the lodge, where your guides and pangas patiently await to carry you to the crystal waters and wild fish that surround us. After a cup of coffee and fresh fruit or our special huevos rancheros for breakfast, you’ll head out to chase the immense schools of bonefish, wily local permit, and migratory tarpon we are famous for, as well as tough backcountry snook, snapper, barracuda and more. Each boat has two guides, as well as a cooler packed with lunch, snacks, water, soda and beer to keep your strength up. Eat well, you’re going to need it.

And once you return in the afternoon, a cold drink at our fully stocked bar awaits, where you can share the hard-earned stories of your encounters with the local wildlife over some appetizers in preparation for an unforgettable dinner made fresh on-site with locally sourced ingredients.

And after unwinding with your friends and a nightcap* on our spacious beachfront porch, you can retire to your comfortable air-conditioned room to recharge for another day of action tomorrow.

*Catch your first permit on fly, and tradition calls for the ancient honor of eating one of our local ornery scorpions, chased with a shot of tequila. You’ve been warned. 

Our Accommodations

Main Lodge

The ground floor has a large dining room, bar, kitchen, and patio seating out the dining room door. The second floor has 3 double rooms and a spacious porch for relaxing after fishing and after dinner with plenty of space to tie flies, rig rods, play poker, or just enjoy the company. The west building has 2 double rooms on the second floor level, and one spacious double room on the ground floor.

Bebidas

The bar is fully stocked with a variety of liquors, wines, sodas, mixers and ice cold local beers. If any guests would like a particular liquor while staying at Kay Fly, it is recommended that the bottle be brought down with the guests or let us know in advance. A bar tab will be kept for each guest to be paid at the end of the stay by cash or check only.

La Comida

All meals are prepared on site by local cooks with locally sourced ingredients. The cuisine is a combination of traditional Mayan and Mexican cuisine with Caribbean and American influences. The daily breakfast offerings include a choice of fresh fruit, eggs, or local fare. The specialty of the lodge are a traditional Mayan treat called salbutes. Each boat’s cooler is packed every day with sandwiches, fruit, cookies, crackers and cold beverages for lunch on the water.

Internet

Kay Fly has wireless internet and 24 hour power so access to the internet is always available during your stay. Our internet is not high speed, but sufficient to text, email, and usually make an audio call.

Phone

There is no landline phone at the lodge or anywhere in Punta Allen. Facetime audio calls and WhatsApp audio calls are the best options. We also recommend enabling wifi calling on your phone. It makes it easier to make and receive calls and texts.

Laundry

Clothing items can be washed at Kay Fly every 24 hours. There is a small charge per item. Please put your laundry in the bin provided and put the bin on the bed in the morning.

Drinking Water

All drinking water and ice is purified. There is a purified water dispenser on the second floor and pitchers of purified water in each room. You will also find a purified water dispenser in the kitchen.

All ice for beverages is made from purified water. Please do not consume the ice in the coolers on the boats.

Kick Plastic

We are in the process of eliminating single use plastic at the lodge. Guests and guides are provided with reusable water bottles to refill daily.

We buy purified water in 5 gallon reusable jugs for all drinking water at the lodge. If you would like more information on the Kick Plastic campaign don’t hesitate to ask Lily.

Ascension Bay

Located on the southern edge of the Yucatan Peninsula roughly 100 miles south of Cancun, in the Sian, Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, Ascension Bay lives up to its reputation as one of the global epicenters of inshore fly fishing. The crystal clear flats, tidal channels and mangrove shorelines of the bay create a perfect ecosystem for the grand slam species of permit, tarpon and bonefish to gather, as well as snook, snapper, barracuda, jacks and more. Fishing varies by season, but is great year-round. The Kay Fly lodge gives you easy access to the entire variety of fishing that Ascension Bay has to offer, mere minutes from the door.

We have created a week-long fishing package includes 7 nights with all meals and 6 days of guided fishing. Tips, laundry service, and drinks from the bar can be paid for at the end of the stay in cash. Lily will arrange your roundtrip transportation from Cancun to the lodge. Gratuities

The recommended standard base gratuity is $100 USD per boat, per day. If you have an exceptional day (permit, grand slam or super slam) more is greatly appreciated. As for house staff Kay Fly recommends $20-25 USD per client per day to divide between kitchen, housekeeper, server, rod cleaner. A tip on the bar tab for thebartender is also greatly appreciated. A 10% gratuity for the airport transfer is recommended as well.
